The Attack on Sierra Colony commonly known as The Invasion of Sierra or The First Zeon Colony to fall was a crucial engagement in the early days of the Zeon Civil War, and was also known to be the first major Zenora Empire blitz attack on the Principality of Zeon in November of UC 0096.
The outcome of this engagement, lead to the Principality of Zeon beginning its mass production of Mobile Suits and Mobile Armors, due to Jack Sara's defenses at the time being mostly infantry and ground armor, with only minimum mobiles suit support, including Heirshy, M'Quve, and Char Aznable.
The Assault on Sierra Colony occured about 30 days after the the Side-9 Massacre, and war had been declared.
The sudden fall of Sierra, would eventually force the Principality of Zeon into once again producing munitions, and mobile suits, which they haven't done since the One Year War, while at the same time also realizing the fact that their old outclassed One Year War Era Mobile Suits and equipment stood absolutely no chance against Zenora's more modern equipment and mobile suits.
The first Battle of the Zeon Civil War also saw the return of the Red Comet Char Aznable, who was long thought to be dead since UC 0093, and the major turn of events for the way on how the Principality of Zeon would pilot their mobile suits from here on out.
Prior to the Event[]
Following the Massacre that plagued Side-9 several weeks earlier on October 1s5 UC 0096, the Principality of Zeon had declared war against the Zenora Empire, for massive aggression against the state, and began to mobilize the production of mobile suits from Side 3 and Corrusilum, in order to prepare for a short conflict, which at the time they would have no idea that their adversary was a lot more advanced and alot more up to date compared to the Principality of Zeon who still housed and used old One Year War Era mobile suits, Tanks, ships Uniforms and guns.
However, the Zenora Empire was able to already organize a successful strike force against the Principality of Zeon, before the Zeon Military could be fully be mobilized, by attacking and Invading the Colony of Sierra in Nexus Sector. Further prompting most of the Principality of Zeon to respond from Demarco Colony in hopes of repelling the assault, while more Battle group were enroute from Sides 3, Corrusilum and Ruined A Baoa Qu.
Engagement[]
As reinforcements were inbound, the Zenora Armada, which composed of at least 39 Destroyers, and 15 Cruisers, had deployed Mobile Suits smashing through the Principality of Zeon's orbital defense lines outside Sierra Colony, before breaching the space dock and entering the inside of Sierra Colony.
Due to the colony, no longer possessing actual Mobile Suits to defend it at the moment, and only being defended by Zeon ground infantry, tanks and aircraft, Zenora was able to succeed in overrunning at least 78 percent of the Colony within a matter of days, to the point that the Principality of Zeon ended up getting pushed back toward the city of Mornasio, the capital of Sierra Colony, and the largest city state amongst the Zeon Space colonial Territorial Zone.
Despite being under siege and surrounded by Zenora forces with no mobile suit protection, Zeon ground forces were able to hold their ground against wave after wave of Zenora forces for up to about 10 days, through the use of heavy rocket artillery, defense turrets, and carpet bombing runs along the entire perimeter,
By November 11th, UC 0096 the 11th day of the Invasion, the Principality of Zeon battle group arrived from Side 3 first, prior to the ones from A Baoa Qu, and Corrusilum, where they soon engaged in battle with heavy fortified Zenora defenses around Sierra Colony, while also deploying mobile suits in order to make it down inside of Sierra in hopes of reinforcing the trapped zeon ground forces at Mornasio. At the course of the engagement, the Principality of Zeon were able to lower Doms, Gelgoogs and Zaku II's and 1s onto the colony, while Heirshy led the team.
Unfortunately, the situation only worsened as the Zenora Imperial forces through the use of their mor modernized mobile suits, were able to inflict heavy damage amongst the Principality of Zeon in both space and while they were descending down to the Colony, eventually trapping the reinforcements at Mornasio with the battered ground forces. Despite this disastrous turn of events, Heirshy ordered most of the mobile suit teams to cover the ground forces, as they continued to fend off Zenora ground forces, while many other Mobile suits ripped destroyed buildings from the ground and placed them on the field in a desperate attempt to be used as cover against the Zenora attack. As heavy fighting continued on into November 12th, UC 0096, the Principality of Zeon's Corrusilum and A Baoa Qu battle groups that were under the command of Fleet Commander George avery, had arrived in order to try and reinforce the now battered Side 3 battalions in space, but instead of splitting its forces, with one heading for the inside of Sierra and the other covering the fleet, both battle groups, Fleet Commander George Avery, instead focused on defending the fleet by attacking the Zenora Imperial forces in space by moving its entire fleet against the Zenora Imperial Orbital Navy, with the use of mobile suit escorts, in hopes of destroying the Zenora navy within close range, much to the disapproval of Rear Admiral Kycilia.
This one decision prove to be a costly tactic in the entire engagement, th, the A Baoa Qu and Corrusilum battle groups were overrun and destroyed, leaving only the SIde 3 battlegroup left in space outside Sierra Colony by November 15th, UC 0096.
Back on the ground On November 13th, UC 0096, while the war in Space is going on, the Zenora ground Invasion constantly launched coordinated and successful test strikes against the Principalities defenses, which in turn grew the suspicions of Heirshy, and even Vice Admiral Kycilia in space, when she learned about this, however by the time Heirshy was able to find out what the true plan of the Zenora forces were, it was too late.
On November 14th, UC 0096, the Zenora Empire launched a full scale assault on the Principality of Zeon's western Morsonia's defense perimeter, that was guarded by Zaku II's and Dom's officially breaching their lines and overrunning the entire western perimeter, bringing the war into the streets of Morsonia.
As Panic gripped the streets of Morsonia, as civilians struggled to get clear of the Battlefield, while many others couldn't risk the odds of stepping outside and remained indoors. The City was soon reduced into a ruined wasteland, with the Principality of Zeon using the ruins as cover, in hopes of preventing Zenora Mobile suits from advancing any farther into the city. That tactic was able to work for a few hours, as more and more Principality of Zeon mobile suits entered the city from the East, in hopes of trying to prevent the Zenora forces from taking over.
Realizing that the Defenses are breached, Heirshy enters Marsonia himself and fights off many of the modernized Mobile Suits, only to witness that one of the newer mobile suits beam sabers were able to successfully slash through a Zaku II ax slicing it in half, before destroying the mobile suit itself through a slash in the torso. Fighting continued throughout the night until November 15th UC 0096, when the Eastern front, due to being severely weakened from having to send forces in to try and hold the city alone, crumbled that morning, forcing the rest of the Principality of Zeon around the city to abandon their defenses and focus primarily on Morsonia.
The fight for the city was intense, with both Zeon Mobile suits and ground forces struggling to keep hold of the city, but were being pushed back block by block, finally in the late afternoon of November of 15th, UC 0096, after learning that the reinforcements from both A Baoa Qu and Corrusilum had been destroyed in space, thanks to the incompatants of fleet commander George Avery, the forces of Zeon including Herishy himself eventually realized that the situation was hopeless and that they needed to evacuate into space, otherwise they would be overrun.
While the Zeon ground forces fought hard to get out of the city, by breaking through a small weaking line in the Zenora siege ring, and fighting their way towards the Elevator that leads to the colony entrance, Admiral Kycilia ordered what ships she had in space to remain in position until the ground forces could arrive.
Unfortunately as the Principality of Zeon struggled to make their way out of the Colony, the remaining ships of the Side 3 Battlegroup, began to take heavy losses as more Zenora naval vessels then arrived from out of Deep space, at this point completely outnumbering the Principality of Zeon 50 to 1, with time running out, the Principality of Zeon ground forces were able to make it back to space at last minute through the Orbital colonial elevator, while Zanzibar and GAW Attack Carriers were quick to try and transport the ground troops and ground based Doms.
Unfortunately, despite the remains of the Zeon ground forces being brought back onboard the vessels of the Side 3 Battlegroup, the route was now blocked, with the Principality of Zeon with no way to escape, prompting the remaining space bound mobile suits that the Principality of Zeon had left into escorting the remains of the Side 3 battle group.
The tide suddenly turned, when Sazabi Mobile suit then arrived, after having to blend in with the Zenora Imperial forces, and attack them, opening up the road for the Principality of Zeon to escape, through the blockade of Zenora ships, while Mobile Suits stayed behind to cover them as they got further away.
Once the Side 3 battle group was now far enough away to the point that by November 16th, UC 0096, that the Zenora Empire could no longer follow, Heirshy and the Sazabi pilot then began to escort the remaining Mobile suits from the area, which by noon thanks to the help of the Sazabi they were able to get away.
Aftermath[]
The fall of Sierra Colony came with shock amongst the entire Zeon population, with many of them crying out for war, and enlisting into the Principality of Zeon ranks, which was something that has not been done, since the founding of the Principality of Zeon on August 15th, UC 0069.
The remains of the battered Side 3 group had reached the ruins of A Baoa Qu, in order to try and recover following the disastrous counterattack, while Corrusilum and Side 3, began a mass production of mobile suits all over the Zeon colonies.
Sierra in the aftermath became a Zenora HQ and used as a foot hole within Zeon Space in order to prepare for the drive on Side 3, however plans to Invade Side 3, were instead cancelled, and were changed into finishing off the rest of Nexus Center in hopes of gathering a stronghold large enough to hit the Principality of Zeon from the entire perimeter, and destroy Side 3 in one clear strike.
Legacy[]
The pilot that was responsible for saving the remaining Zeon forces, was later identified to be Char Aznable, the formal Red Comet, who was long thought to have been declared KIA during the time of the Second Neo Zeon War on March 13th, UC 0093, who had watched the battle while blending in with the Zenora forces, until the time was right.
Char Aznable would then go on to train the Principality of Zeon mobile suit forces for the use of modernized warfare, into which by November 22nd, all Zeon pilots including foot soldiers would be trained on how to take on a modernized mobile suit, while at the same time learning how to evade, and elude funnel attacks. Forever changing the history of the principality of Zeon, and how they conduct warfare on the battlefield, along with the Navy and Ground Infantry forces.
This plan succeeded when the rest of the Zenora Imperial forces arrived from deep space, and began their assault on Demarco Colony, by December 24th, UC 0096, whom unknown to them at that time period, was that the Principality of Zeon, with the use of Char's teachings were alot more confident and ready to take them on.
